The Etiqutte Sessions
September 26
The Second Floor,
Chicago, IL
The Etiquette Sessions is a jam session series presented by the Chicago Black Artist Union in partnership with Jon Bitoy—pianist and owner of The Second Floor. This series pays homage to the tradition of the jam session, the oldest and most essential institution of Black creative music known as jazz.
In the golden era of this music, one could walk into any number of clubs and witness artists of all backgrounds showcasing their musical mastery and expressive freedom. It wasn’t just the music that captivated—it was the style, the presence, the poise. These musicians embodied sophistication not only in their sound, but in their very being.
Younger artists naturally gravitated toward the elder statesmen of the scene—musicians who had once been unrefined themselves, but through time, experience, and dedication had become walking symbols of class, wisdom, and integrity. They established the order. They set the tone.
Today, the music scene is evolving rapidly—across this country and around the world. A new generation of ambitious artists is emerging, ready to carve new paths. But in doing so, it is essential they understand what came before them. Knowledge of the past doesn't hinder innovation—it empowers it.
The Etiquette Sessions aim to create a space for connection, mentorship, and the shared culture of Black musical excellence. These gatherings are about more than performance—they are about legacy. Because one day, the young will become the old. And if nothing is passed on, the future loses its foundation.
The Jam will be hosted by Chairman Isaiah Collier
Our Mission Statement
The Chicago Black Artist Union is dedicated to empowering Black artists by providing resources, guidance, and opportunities to thrive within the art industry. We act as a liaison for artists who may not be familiar with the business side of the arts world, helping them navigate the complexities of representation, networking, and career growth.
Our mission is to:
Create Opportunities: We create avenues for Black artists to showcase their work, connect with industry professionals, and secure paid engagements.
Serve as a Gateway: By acting as the initial contact for artists, we facilitate connections with clients, galleries, institutions, and other industry players, taking a percentage for our services as compensation.
Provide Financial Support: We help artists fund their productions and initiatives, ensuring that their creative vision is supported from concept to execution.
Foster Community: We build a network of Black artists across disciplines, offering support, collaboration opportunities, and a sense of belonging within the larger arts ecosystem.
